We encourage interested scholars to check our website periodically for updates on when we will begin accepting applications again. Thank you for your understanding and interest in our program.

Application Procedures

This program is for visitors who do not require financial support from the East-West Center. Visitors must comply with all Center health and safety requirements which may include quarantine and restrictions on access to areas of the Center's campus. The Center is not liable for travel arrangements cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

As of November 1, 2022, Visiting scholars will be asked to contribute the following:

  • US$1,500 per month space fee
  • US$350 processing fee if a J-1 visa is required
  • Submit a piece publishable in the East-West Center's AsiaPacific Issues
  • Make a presentation to the East-West Center community through an EWC Insights or EWCW Indo-Pacific Seminar public program format.

Application deadlines are March 31 and September 30 each year.

Applications must include:

  • A cover letter indicating the research theme or project for which the applicant is applying
  • Curriculum vitae, which may be circulated among Center staff (For security reasons, please do not include any personal information such as birth date, social security number, and/or passport number.)
  • Research proposal (3–5 pages) including:
    1. The issue or issues you propose to investigate
    2. Your research method
    3. The relationship of the proposed study to ongoing work in the area
    4. How the proposed study can advance regional development and cooperation
    5. The duration of fellowship required, expected time that the applicant can be in residence in Honolulu at the East-West Center
    6. The anticipated publication product
