As U.S.-China trade talks continue to make headlines, these experts address the current state-of-play in relations between the two countries.
Raymond Burghardt (Chairman, Pacific Century Institute) was Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) from 2006-2016 and Director of the AIT in Taipei from 1999-2001. He was U.S. Consul General in Shanghai in the late 1990s and later ambassador to Vietnam. Burghardt was the East-West Center’s Director of Seminars for eight years. He is just back from a fact-finding trip to Beijing, Seoul, Taipei and Tokyo, sponsored by the National Committee on American Foreign Policy.
Denny Roy (EWC Research Fellow) studies security and international relations in Northeast Asia with a strong focus on China, Taiwan and North Korea. He formerly served on the faculties of the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies, the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, the Australian National University and the National University of Singapore.
Richard Vuylsteke (EWC President) served as President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong (2008-2016) and as President of the American Chamber in Taipei (1999-2008.) He has also served as Editor-in-Chief of the Taiwan Review and Area Studies Coordinator for the U.S. Department of State Foreign Service Institute in Taipei.
