2018 EWC/EWCA International Conference in Seoul 2018 EWC/EWCA International Conference in Seoul

About 350 scholars, officials, educators and business leaders from 30 countries gathered at the 2018 EWC/EWCA international alumni conference in Seoul, South Korea on August 23-25, 2018 at the Lotte Hotel Seoul.

The conference theme was "Intercultural Engagement in the Asia-Pacific Community" and involved over a hundred presenters in seven substantive plenary sessions and twenty-four concurrent panel sessions. Keynote addresses were made by Dr. Seok-Hyun Hong, Chairman of JoongAng Holdings and Korea Peace Foundation and Dr. Il Sakong, Chairman of the Institute for Global Economics.

In Dr. Hong’s address, "The Start of Peace and Prosperity on the Korean Peninsula", he discussed what it will take for the Korean peninsula to transition toward peace.

Former Korean Finance Minister (and EWC Board of Governors member), Dr. Il SaKong's address, "Korea’s Economic Challenges in the 4th Industrial Revolution" identified key reforms he believes are needed for Korea to maintain a competitive edge amid the sweeping technological changes of the '4th industrial revolution.’

 

  Ambassador Harry B. Harris, Jr.

Newly appointed US Ambassador to South Korea, Harry B. Harris, Jr. and the ambassadors of Australia, Japan and Singapore discussed varied national views on the impact, challenges and opportunities of globalization versus a more regional approach in a Diplomatic Roundtable.   Cultural Workshops

 

 

 

Workshops featuring Korean Calligraphy, Traditional Costume (Hanbok), and Tea Ceremony were offered to participants to give them a sense of the Korean culture.




 

Awards for the EWC/EWCA Distinguished Alumni and EWCA Outstanding Volunteer, 21st Century Outstanding Service, and Outstanding Chapter were presented during a luncheon on August 25th. Participants enjoyed a cultural performance at the welcome reception and put on their own traditional talent show during the closing Aloha Banquet.

The conference was hosted by East-West Center, East-West Center Association (EWCA) and the EWCA Seoul Chapter.
