In 2012, AIJI established a presence in Dhaka, Bangladesh, to observe and report on criminal trial proceedings at the International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh.  Almost forty years after the period of violent conflict, the government of Bangladesh has decided to prosecute alleged local collaborators who sided with the Pakistani armed forces to perpetrate war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide during the 1971 war of independence. The war crimes process in this special national tribunal is based on a 1973 law, the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act. Our program in Bangladesh builds on years of experience with trial monitoring and rule of law promotion in the region, in countries such as Cambodia, Indonesia, and East Timor.  AIJI has sent a team of international law experts to work in Dhaka together with national trial observers, establishing a daily presence in the courtroom and producing reliable, objective, public reporting on the proceedings.
